Sportyfeel Helsinki City Marathon route was renewed in 2015 and it has received excellent feedback since then. In 2018 the route will be the same than in 2017. The route has been planned based on the feedback from runners, in close cooperation with the City of Helsinki.
The route has two laps where first one is longer, having a approximately 8 km loop in the Southern end of the city and reaching all the way to Central Market Square, City Town Hall and the Esplanades. The second lap is the same than first excluding the south loop.
The route has 14 service points and it offers nice spots for spectators to cheer the runners on. Many sights of Helsinki are also located just next to the route. Everyone runs in the same direction the whole time, which makes running smooth and safe.
The route is relatively flat and comfortable to run. Please see the Elevation Profile in the end of the page. The runners are able to avoid hills towards the end of the race. The last eight kilometres of the route are run on flat, paved road. This makes the course smoother for the runners and helps them break their personal records. The long hills that used to slow down and exhaust the runners at the end of the old route are now run twice in the course of the run, but in the other direction.
The iconic Helsinki Olympic Stadium is under renovation until year 2020 and all Helsinki City Running Day races end at Telia 5G Areena just next door.
The police and traffic controllers will be controlling the route. At some point, the vehicles might have to be let in between the runners and it might hinder the pace of the runners for a moment.
The spectators can watch the race along the route (Note: At some spots, there are traffic limitations, which will slow down or even stop traffic).
At the Telia 5G Areena (Open from 10 AM), spectators can go to the spectator area to cheer for the runners.
Marathon will start at 3 PM outside the Olympic Stadium next to the statue of Mr. Paavo Nurmi (Address: Mäntymäentie, Helsinki).
The runners should be at the start area at 2:45 PM the latest. Select your preferred spot at the start area according to your own expected finishing time. The areas are marked by signs: 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00 etc.). Make sure you are in good time if you wish to get a good position at the start area.
In the map below Marathon's and Relay's 1st lap is the red line and 2nd lap is the yellow line and the finish is the purple line.
(Note that starting corrals in the picture below are only for HCR half marathon)
Wallets, cell phones, keys, and other small valuables are recommended to leave to the safety deposit located outside of the Telia 5G-areena. The storage will be open from 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM on the race day.
A fee of 5 EUR will be charged, and only runners wearing a bib number will be let in.
Please notice, that we can accept only cash.
A timing car will travel in front of the leading runner. In addition, there are clocks at 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, 25 km, 30 km and 35 km. You can see your finishing time from the big clock above the finishing line.
Sportyfeel Helsinki City Marathon timing and result system partner is Ultimate Sport Service. The system works with a bib tag attached to the bib number. Bib number needs to be attached to the front of the shirt, so that it is clear and visible. It should not be folded any time. Bib number is personal and it cannot be given or trasferred to another person for safety reasons.
Gross time (from firing of the gun to crossing the finish line) is the official result of the race. Also so called the net time, time from crossing the starting line to crossing the finish line, will be given to each runner.
Split times are available at the 10, 20, 30, 40 km marks.
Organizer has the right to determine the timing system annually. Participants must obey the organizer´s guidance to using the system. Runners who do not comply with the instructions, are not promised an official time and result.
Toilets are available at Töölön Kisahalli and at Telia 5 G Areena.
Temporary toilets are located at the gear check area, start area, along the route and at finish area.
Please note that the might be a waiting line at the toilets due to large number of participants.
Sportyfeel Helsinki City Marathon bib number is personal and should not be given to another person.
